High resolution satellite imagery identifies vegetation interfering with power cables.
Overstory is a vegetation intelligence startup which uses high resolution satellite imagery to analyse the vegetation to prevent wildfires and power outages which happen when vegetation interferes with power cables.
The startup uses machine learning to interpret satellite imagery and climate data to extract detailed insights about trees and shrubs. They can build up data on vegetation species, health, height and proximity to power lines, creating a picture of all the current and future risks. Field visits can focus on high risk areas where vegetation might grow into or fall onto power lines. It also keeps an eye on the work that contractors do to make sure that pruning has been carried out as expected and that the risk has been suitably reduced.
So far they have analysed over 500 million hectares of land in 64 countries.
