Memphis Meats has raised $3million in seed funding to take animal cells and grow them in a petri dish into lab grown meat in a cruelty free and planet friendly way. So far they have created a lab grown meatball and are hoping to grow turkey meat to save some of the 50 million birds slaughtered for Thanksgiving every year.
Memphis Meats launched in 2015, 10 years after they had the initial idea. It took them just 1 year to create the world’s first cell based meatball and another year to grow cell based poultry in their lab. Following some funding rounds (yes even Richard Branson has invested) they are on track to save millions of animals from slaughter.
